More Great Information on Lil Sioux:
archery question?
i am going to buy a more powerful bow than the one i have now. the one i have now is a, ''lil sioux, 15lb draw.'' ( i know, kinda sad isnt it, lol)
i am looking to buy either this one,
http://www.amazon.com/PSE-Buckeye-Wood-Take-Down-Recurve/dp/B000HDORPO/ref=pd_sbs_sg_title_1
or this one,
http://www.amazon.com/PSE-Archery-Buckeye-Recurve-Weight/dp/B0000B0EM8/ref=pd_sbs_sg_img_5
which do you think is a better buy? i also need to know what leangh of arrow i should use for both bows.
i am a Right Handed shooter. and i also ned to know what Draw Weight should i get if i am used to a 15lb, i was thinking either a 25 or 30lb.
NOTE: i am only using this bow for target shooting, (not that i dont hunt)
this question is mainly for archers who know what their talking about, and please NO rude comments. thank you.
Well they're the same bow, just that the first link will give you a choice of left or right hand also weight. The second link only got that one 25# bow for sale.
The buckeye is a good beginner bow, we have a few of those at the club. The problem with the buckeye is that the sight window is rather small. If you look at the bow, a portion of the riser is cut out to allow the arrow to be closer to the centerline of the bow. This cut out portion is called a sight window. A small sight window means the bow will have limited distance adjustment if you're going to shoot with sights. Which is usually not that big of a deal, since these bows are really not meant to be shot from long distances. By long distance I mean distances exceeding 70 yards.
As for arrow length, you'll need to get your draw length measured. The best way is to use a measuring arrow, it's an arrow with a blunt tip that has markings on it's side so someone can tell right off the bat what your draw length is. If you don't have access to one of those, get you lil sioux bow and your arrow. Ask someone for help, what they need to do is mark the arrow with a sharpie. Draw the bow with the arrow in it to your anchor. Then have him mark the arrow where is meets the back of the bow. Now the back of the bow is the side that is facing the target, or facing away from you. Repeat this process 3 more times to make sure you have a consistent draw. if not, average the draws. The lil sioux bow is very thing longbow if I'm not mistaken, so now you have a mark on the arrow. Take a tape measure and measure the length from the bottom of the nock groove to that mark. Take this number and add 1" to it to approximate the thickness of a standard recurve. This is then your drawlength, and the length of arrow you're going to need. For economical reasons though I usually like to leave the arrow just a bit long, that way if your draw happen to increase you don't need to buy a new set of arrows.
The bigger question here is, what size arrow you will need. This size is dependent on the length and the weight of the bow at that length. So let's say you bought the 25# bow, this 25# bow will be 25# if you draw it back 28". If your drawlength end up being 29" then it becomes, usually, 27#. If your drawlength is only 25", then the bow is only 19#. So using this rule of thumb you can come up with the actual draw weight, and draw length. These two numbers will determine the arrow size. I would suggest aluminum arrows for starter. Cheap, durable, and flys well. Assuming 25# at 28" drawlength, the arrow size for you would be around a 1816. Google up "Easton shaft selector", select Recurve Bow for cam and select your weight and draw length. Here's the kicker, make sure you go a step above what it's saying. So let's say you have 25# at 28" draw, select 24-29# at 29" draw. Reason for this is, the chart is based off of world class archers with super smooth releases, us mortals don't have the kind of skill to match that, so we need to always select a shaft that is stiffer than them. Good luck, if you have more questions feel free to email me.
