Urban Logistics Go Electric by Brayton Energy Canada
Urban Logistics Go Electric
Volkswagen’s Phaeton assembly plant in the heart of Dresden, Germany, has been dubbed the Transparent Factory. Its glass walls and daily guided public tours allows anyone interested to witness one of the greenest manufacturing plants in the world. Yet it’s not just what goes on inside the plant that is cutting edge, but what happens outside too. More specifically, the way VW moves parts and supplies into its urban plant demonstrates an urban factory can create a transportation system that is efficient, city friendly and environmentally sustainable.
In Dresden, VW relies on electric-powered cargo tram services — essentially electric streetcars modified to carry cargo rather than people — to move supplies and parts through the city and into its Dresden plant. Once inside the plant, the factory relies on driverless, battery-operated trolleys controlled by more than 60,000 magnets hidden beneath the parquet floor to move parts to assembly stations.
The Transparent Factory is a real-life demonstration of the possible solutions available to deal with the problems inherent in conventional urban transportation systems: air pollution and congestion, which causes inefficiencies in supply chains and ultimately increases costs for manufacturers and consumers.
In a lecture in February of this year, John Sterman, a professor of management and engineering systems at MIT, presented a sobering scenario. He pointed out that there is a huge latent demand for mass mobility as the global population is on track to hit nine billion by 2050, with most of that population residing in cities.
It is clear to Sterman that we need to think differently about how we transport goods and people in urban areas. People need access to goods, services, people and opportunities. Transportation systems, as we know them today, will simply not sustain the world’s growing population.
This speaks directly to perhaps the biggest problem with transportation today: a dependence on oil. “There are two things we can do to deal with this problem,” says Richard Gilbert, a transportation and energy consultant based in Toronto. “Keep internal combustion engines but get them to run on something other than oil — which we haven’t had much success with — or adopt another means, which essentially means electric motors, our most viable alternative to the internal combustion engine.”
From where he sits, Mr. Gilbert believes the future lies with electric vehicles that get their power while they are in motion, much like Volkswagen’s electric trams in Dresden. “The vehicles are connected to and get their power from the grid.”
To that end, the General Transport System Foundation in Sweden is developing a comprehensive system, one that will work for cars and trucks moving people and freight both in and between cities. The system is based on building a guideway, or elevated rail system, where automated podcars that can carry both people and cargo are “suspended alongside an upside down U-beam and use magnetic carrying, steering, switching and platooning technology.”
This is a variation of another innovative concept: personal rapid transport, which represents a new approach to public transit. “It’s basically trying to combine the best bits of private car-based transport with public transport,” says Ray Tomalty, adjunct professor in the school of urban planning at McGill University and principal of Smart Cities Research.
“The idea is you go to a pod-car station that is close to your house, key in where you are going and a pod arrives to take you there. It’s a fixed link. It’s unlike a car in that you can only go where the system goes. But unlike a bus, you can go to your final destination in one pod.” The systems are driverless, electric-powered, hold a handful of people and are electronically controlled. According to the latest analysis of international developments on this front, the expectation is that about 50 personal rapid transit systems will be built within 10 years.
A version of this system is now up and running at Heathrow Airport in London and is being established in Masdar City, a new renewable energy-powered city in Abu Dhabi. In fact, no internal-combustion engines of any sort will operate in the city. Planners have opted for a network of electric trams and personal rapid transit vehicles controlled by a central computer.
“Conventional thinking is based on mobility, which requires building more infrastructure for cars. Emerging thinking is based on accessibility, which means transit-oriented development where you have a metro or train station or some sort of transportation hub in the middle of a high-density mixed-use neighbourhood,” says Mr. Tomalty. “The main attraction of cars is that they can take you to exactly where you want to go. All the roads and highways are connected — it’s a continuous system. Transport hubs operate much the same, offering a seamless interchange between bus, subway, commuter train and so on. The cities of Boston and Helsinki already feature transportation hubs.”
Interestingly, hubs just happen to be a key element in transportation strategy for VW’s Transparent Factory in Dresden.
